Gran’s tray in clay – Archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine art paper
€200 – €350
Gran’s tray in clay is an Archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine art paper.
This is part of a new expansion into photographing details of my sculptures for print. The original sculpture is pictured on the back of the card. This sculpture was an ode to my Gran, and the Irish salad plate on individual trays that she always made for myself and my siblings when we visited. The salad is created from modeled and painted clay, on a Willow pattern plate ( as she would have used), on one of her original trays.
‘Whenever we went to see my Gran, she always laid out a lunch tray for each of us. She had a collection of metal trays and each one was ritually set with the same willow pattern delf, a plate, tea-cup and saucer, and cutlery, often bone handled. There was an apple pie in the grill waiting to be heated up later, and the plate was always the same, always laid out exactly the same. There was a few pieces of lettuce, rolls of ham, half a tomato, quartered, and some sandwich spread. There must have been bread somewhere but it hasn’t stuck in my memory. Gran was already residing in her chair in the living room, we never saw her in the kitchen; she was to us a lady to be quietly revered. These lunches was so foreign to the food that we ate at home that it has lodged deeply in my memory, and it has recently been a constant source of curiosity to me to find out about other people’s memories of the Irish salad of the time. The question that keep arising is Where’s the boiled egg?’
